What is cable gland used for?
Cable glands are defined as "mechanical cable entry devices" used with cables and wiring in electrical, instrumentation and control, and automation systems, including lighting, power, data, and telecommunications.
The primary function of a cable gland is to act as a sealing and termination device to ensure protection of electrical equipment and enclosures, including providing:
Environmental Protection - Remove dust and moisture from electrical or instrumentation enclosures by sealing the outer cable jacket.
Ground Continuity - In the case of armored cables, when the cable splice has a metallic construction. In this case, the cable glands can be tested to ensure they can withstand the appropriate peak short-circuit fault current.
Retention - Ensure adequate level of mechanical cable "pull out" resistance on the cable.
Additional sealing - when a high degree of protection is required, on the part of the cable entering the enclosure.
Additional Environmental Sealing - At the cable entry, the protection rating of the enclosure is maintained by selecting the appropriate accessories designed to perform this function.
Cable glands can be made of metallic or non-metallic materials (or a combination of the two) that also have corrosion resistance determined by selection criteria or through corrosion resistance testing.
Especially when used in explosive atmospheres, cable glands must be approved for the selected type of cable and they must maintain the level of protection for the equipment they are connected to.
